Fascinating Story of Vastu Purusha?

Indian mythology is full of stories that tell about the several characters that somehow leaves an impact on our daily lives. One compelling story revolves around the character called Vastu Purusha from Indian texts. The text cites the chaos he created and how all Gods controlled him. The story also depicts the origin of Vastu Purusha Mandala (basis of Vastu Shastra) and its importance.

Story

It began when Lord Brahma created Universe and thought of making some creatures. He experimented that a ‘man’ would be the best option but this wasn’t ordinary man but was huge and had excessive powers to develop. Once created, the creature started to grow. With the passing time, his grew giant and his hunger increased. He began to eat everything and slowly his shadow had a perpetual eclipse on the earth.

The entire episode for Shiva and Vishnu to see what is in the near future. They went to Lord Brahma and requested him to stop this giant man from making chaos and Brahma understood what terrible mistake he made which needs immediate attention. But because he was huge, he was too powerful for Brahma to control. So, Brahma requested the Gods of eight directions (Ashta Dikapalakas) to come forward and help him in controlling.

Upon request, the Ashta Dikapalakas grabbed and overpowered him. They pinned him down against the ground with his head in North-East direction and legs in South-West direction while Brahma jumped in the center of the mandala.

The man started to cry and questioned Brahma ‘why he is doing this to him? You created me and now treating me with this? What is my fault?’
Brahma thought for a moment and then responded that he knows it’s not ‘man’s’ fault but he became threat for everyone. Brahma don’t want him to ruin what he has created. Hence, he wanted ‘man’ to stay like this forever.

The man asked Brahma how this will benefit him to which God answered that he will make the man ‘immortal’. And any mortal man who will build any structure has to worship him. The man can tease,trouble to devour them if they do not worship him and keep him happy. The man is still present in all land and us known as ‘Vastu Purusha’. He agreed to this deal and became inseparable part of the earth.

What is Vastu Purusha Mandala?

From the above story, you can understand that Gods pinned down the Vastu Purusha to the ground is called as Vastu Purusha Mandala. As per Brahma’s words, any plot or land utilised for construction is automatically known as Vastu Purusha Mandala and therefore, Vastu Purusha will be worshipped all over the earth.

How to keep Vastu Purusha happy all times?

In the above diagram, Vastu Purusha was pinned down facing the earth, his head facing the North-East direction and leg towards South-West direction. With the collective effort of 45 Gods along with Brahma, imagine the strength of the ‘man’.

The mandala is divided into 91 parts (9X9=81) where each part is dedicated to God who is holding Vastu Purusha in their respective part while 32 Gods are in outer part and 13 Gods in inner portion. It implies the presence of different Gods in the mandala and each of them rules the different part of human life as per their characteristics.

This implies while making rooms we ensure not to offend any deity of that area. Vastu Shastra cites guidelines and principles to keep each deity happy at all times. As per the Shastra, if any building is constructed as per mandala then there will be prosperity in the building and inhabitants will be happy, wealthy, healthy, and satisfied.

Importance of location of rooms on the basis of direction:

  • North-East: From 3:00 am to 6:00 am, Sun is in the North-East direction of house and this duration is known as Brahma Muhurat, considered best time for exercise, meditation, yoga or study. This concludes this part is suitable for prayer room/ pooja, living or study room.
  • East: The Sun stays in the east section of house from 6:00 am to 9:00 am which is considered best time for getting ready. This portion is suitable for bathroom only not washroom. This is also suitable for living room, unmarried children’s bedroom, dining room, guest bedroom, pooja room or study room.
  • South-East: From 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, Sun is in the South-East direction of the home which is best time for cooking and going out for job. This is suitable location for kitchen, office or unmarried son’s bedroom.
  • South: The duration between 12 noon to 3:00 pm is time to work and Sun in in the Southern portion of home and is perfect for office. The intensity of sunlight is very high in this section and can be utilized for a store room, staircase and toilets.
  • South-West: Post lunch is time for rest i.e. between 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm and the Sun is in South-West portion of home which is best for master bedroom. Staircase or strong room can be a part of it.
  • West: From 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm is known as relaxing and dining. So, the direction is best for dining room in house. This is also suitable for locating children’s bedroom, prayer room, staircase or prayer room.
  • North-West: Between 9:00 pm to 12:00 pm, the time is for relaxing and sleeping, so it is suitable for bedroom. Also, this portion can be utilised for living room.
  • North: From 12:00 am to 3:00 am, the time is considered of secrecy and darkness. This portion is suitable for cash room or strong room. This section is also used as dining or living room.
